Celebrating the Prairie Heritage A
Vacation Experience of Days Gone By DAY 1 Arrive at Sawyer Lake Adventures country home for lunch, followed by an afternoon hiking excursion through the Parkland region. This area is internationally recognized for its diverse bird species including large raptors such as osprey and bald eagles, to small parkland birds such as the bluebird and meadowlark. Interesting plants of the area include the prairie lily, hoary puccon and "prairie smoke", to highlight just a few. Return to the country home for a traditional home-made meal and relaxation. After supper traditional games such as horseshoes and archery are offered.
DAY 2 After a hearty breakfast, guests board a horse drawn wagon and arrive at the sustainable woodlot. The intentions of the horse logging operation are explained and the adventure begins with the art of falling a tree, and continues on to limbing and bucking. Once the log is prepared the horses are hooked up and the log is skidded out to the landing. The stimulating smell of spruce fills the air as the newly-cut timber is prepared to saw. As you ride the wagon back for lunch you will feel exhilarated by the new experiences of the morning. After lunch and a bit of a rest, we grab a paddle and slip the canoe into Loch Lomond Lake. Here you will be introduced to the many species of waterfowl and marsh birds. You may also be greeted by the tail slap of our national animal, the beaver. Supper and sleep are yours to end the day. DAY 3
DAY 4 This day is going to the dogs! After breakfast you are introduced to Rusty, Annie, Outlaw, Mubok, Misty, Tracker and Jade, our enthusiastic sled dog team. You are acquainted with the necessary equipment used in dog training and mushing. After assisting in harnessing the dogs, you venture out on the trails, exploring the parkland area on wheels rather than sled. The afternoon is spent visiting local craftshops. Particular attention is given to the shops that have products hand-made by folks in the immediate area. DAY 5 Today we will turn from the path often traveled, and take a horse and wagon trip to explore more of the landscape. As you travel you may spot some Saskatoon berries or chokecherries ripe for the picking. Take a deep breath and clear your mind to hear the songs of the birds and the rustle of the leaves. Have a picnic lunch and as you travel back we will load the wagon with firewood. The evening is spent sitting around the campfire sharing the day and enjoying the peaceful evening.
A wholesome breakfast is served to begin the day. Spend the morning with a paddle around Loch Lomond Lake and soak in the warmth of Saskatchewan. After lunch we say good-bye, and thank you for the time you spent with us. Additional activities which may be available:
