Boreal Panorama Tour August to NovemberMid-April to Mid-June DAY 1Arrive at Sawyer Lake Adventures for lunch at 1 p.m. Afternoon hiking excursion through the boreal forest. This area is internationally recognized for its diverse birds including redtail hawks, bald eagles, loons and great grey owl. Interesting plants include pitcher plants, Indian pipe and many edible plants, especially berries. Exciting possibilities for nature photography. Return to the lodge for a home-made meal and relaxation. DAY 2 An early fortifying breakfast prepares the adventurers for a day of canoeing through Cree territory. The full day canoe trip navigates miles of back country waterways. Explore Cree traditional hunting and fishing grounds, canoeing from Sawyer Lake through Sawyer Creek into Wachusk Lake, and then portage into Nikik Lake. The day provides total freedom to discover the plant, animal and bird species of the boreal forest, and to experience the quiet exhilaration of watching wildlife in a natural habitat. DAY 3 Today we explore the site of Canada's first territorial government at Fort Livingstone and the original home of Canada's Northwest Mounted Police by vehicle. A few miles away is Fort Pelly, a major 18th century Hudson Bay Co. trading post. The day presents an unbelievable amount of significant Canadian history so close by. Plan also to visit local crafts people, do some shopping, and have lunch in a local small-town restaurant. Travel time is less than one hour each way. DAY 4 This day consists of a guided backpacking trip through the Porcupine Provincial Forest following game trails of black bear, elk (wapiti), moose and white-tail deer. Viewing and interpreting a "working" sustainable horse-logging operation is a bonus feature! Return to the lodge for a peaceful evening of campfire conversation and local folklore. DAY 5 Greet the morning with breakfast on the veranda. Take in a refreshing hike or canoe trip around Sawyer Lake. Return to the city or next location after lunch.
