Bird Watching In All Manner of Forms

Bird watching in Saskatchewan means variety; variety because of our diverse eco-regions... from prairie to parkland, boreal transition, boreal to taiga shield, yes, all in Saskatchewan. Not to mention separate ecosites such as the Athabasca sand-dunes, the Big Muddy badlands and others. Get the picture (pun intended)? Many different eco-regions means many types of habitat so many species of birds.

In this package we dwell on the parkland and boreal species and the birds that fly back and forth because they can’t make up their minds. Must be a human trait.

Because of the diversity of our company we can bear down and focus on the one or two birds you would like to add to your life list. Early mornings, late nights or both if necessary, we will endeavour to the best of our ability to make that addition to your list.

For those birders out there who are a bit less focused, want to see a good variety of birds, but also are interested in an overall experience that will take you home smiling, we provide the following:

All birding trips are started from the comfort of our country home. Often 10-20 species are seen within a few hundred meters of the home allowing for an optimistic beginning to the day. Also starting from the home allows for early morning starts with prepared lunches and appropriate clothing for day.

We offer the conventional means of travel for bird watching, that being walking or by automobile. However, true to our nature, we offer several options:

  • Birding by canoe is a great way to approach those marsh and shore birds which are often hard to view;
  • Birding by horse allows for a pleasant change and a unique vantage point;
  • Birding by sled-dog, yes, I did say sled-dog. The trips originate from our wilderness lodge which is nestled up against the Porcupine Provincial Forest. Travel by dogsled allows us to access areas not always reached in the summer and cover distance further than snowshoes will allow. Although fewer number are seen (tough to be a bird in our Saskatchewan winters) it makes each sighting so much more special. Birds such as the Great Grey Owls, black backed woodpeckers, Boreal Owls and Evening Grosbeaks and others are a pleasant treat in the middle of winter.

For those birders who like numbers and volume, we can get you into the migrations of geese, ducks, shorebirds by the thousands and warblers. How about being immersed in a roosting flock of crows and ravens?

Lots of options! Give us a call and we will put together a holiday you won’t soon forget.
